VC student considering political aspirations after attending leadership institute

VC student Carmen Radicke, left, poses with Texas Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick.

Victoria College KEY Center student Carmen Radicke came back from the National Education for Women (NEW) Leadership Texas Summer Institute in Austin on June 7 with a new inspiration and appreciation for the political process.

Radicke was one of 36 students from 21 colleges and universities selected to attend the six-day conference that serves to educate and encourage women to seek careers in politics, policymaking or public service.

“I had the opportunity to actually meet a lot of our politicians,” said Radicke, who is studying business management at VC. “I had conversations with them and found out how they got from where they were to where they are now. The ladies that I met were so willing to help others.”

Radicke said one of the highlights of the trip was meeting Texas Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick.

“I am considering running for county commissioner,” said Radicke, who lives in the Karnes County community of Gillett. “As soon as I told her that, she said, ‘Here’s my card, and I will be happy to endorse you.’ I was just really amazed at how interactive they all were.”

Radicke, 51, said she decided to continue her education last year after she was laid off from her job.

“I have a lot of work experience in banking and office administration, especially in the oilfield area,” Radicke said. “When last August rolled up, I thought I would take a class or two and enhance my knowledge. That has just turned into so much more.”

Radicke, who was recently named to VC’s Spring 2016 Dean’s List, said she hopes to serve as a motivation for other VC students.

“One reason I went was because a lot of students don’t step out there and embrace these opportunities,” Radicke said. “As a Victoria College student, I wanted to step out there and encourage others at VC to follow.”

“I also really want to thank Victoria College and the KEY Center for opening those doors for me. I am thankful for the Victoria College Foundation for sponsoring me in this opportunity.”
