VC Adult Education Program, Ganado ISD celebrate community partnership
Forty-three Victoria College Adult Education students were recently honored for their completion of 12 weeks of English instruction in Ganado.

Victoria College’s Adult Education program and Ganado Independent School District recently celebrated the completion of a 12-week English instruction program for adults. The course was developed as an effort to increase family literacy and communication on Ganado ISD campuses.

The ceremony honored the 43 participants who completed over 1,800 instructional hours in classes designed to increase English proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The class is offered as part of a Texas Workforce Commission adult education and literacy grant. Class lessons incorporate communication skills and encourage involvement in the community and school.

“We are very excited to be part of this partnership in the community of Ganado,” said Tiffany Johnson, VC’s adult education director. “We want all parents, family and friends to feel comfortable with their English skills and play a role in emphasizing the importance of education.”

ESL Instructors Adriana Aguilar and Susan Pahmiyer have worked with the classes since January.

Special guests attending the ceremony included Dr. John Hardwick, Ganado ISD superintendent, and Andy Bridges and Joey Rosales, Ganado ISD principals.

In addition to student speeches, several children were asked to join the ceremony as “surprise speakers.” The family members voiced their gratitude and words of encouragement for their family members during their efforts to learn a new language.

Adult Basic Education courses at Victoria College cover basic academic subjects to help adult students improve their skills in preparation to take the GED and reach a college-ready level. English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are offered for non-native speakers who need to become proficient enough in English to pass state and citizenship exams and continue with their education.
