VC offering process technician classes to meet demand

Victoria College is offering a variety of process technician and instrumentation classes this fall in preparation for the current and anticipated increase in job opportunities at various processing facilities in the area.

Fred Chastain, VC process technology instructor, said demand for process technicians has increased and is expected to continue at an elevated level due to attrition and expansions.

“It’s not uncommon for a process technician to make $80,000, including overtime, within a couple of years,” Chastain said. “Regular shift schedules require a technician to work 14 out of 28 days.”

According to CareerCoach, the average starting pay for a process technician is $18 per hour and highly experienced workers average $38 per hour.

VC will offer the following process technician classes this fall:

  • Introductory to Process Tech (Aug. 22-Oct. 14 and Aug. 22-Dec. 16)
  • Industrial Processes (Aug. 22-Dec. 16)
  • Process Tech I – Equipment (Aug. 22-Dec. 16)
  • Process Instrumentation I (Oct. 17-Dec. 16)
  • Principles of Quality (Aug. 22-Dec. 16)
  • Safety, Health and Environment II (Aug. 22-Dec. 16)

VC’s Process Technology Program offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree and a one-year certificate in process technology.

“The state-recognized certificate program can be completed in two semesters, the fall and spring,” Chastain said. “This could give students a head start on process technician positions for many of our industrial partners.”

Chastain said the classes teach skills applicable in the petrochemical (plastics), oilfield-related and power generation process facilities.

“These certificates and degrees are ‘portable,’ meaning they will be recognized throughout most of the country,” Chastain said. “So even when local plants aren’t hiring, other opportunities are available for those who are willing to move.”

Registration for the process technician and classes is underway. Contact Chastain at (361) 582-2568 or VC’s Advising and Counseling Services Office at (361) 582-2400 for more information.
