Eleven fourth-year students were recognized recently at the Victoria TexPREP closing ceremony at Victoria College’s Emerging Technology Complex.

Victoria College's Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program (TexPREP) honored 87 middle and high school students who completed the seven-week course that emphasizes mathematics-related areas of study and their application for potential careers in similar fields.

Victoria College President Dr. David Hinds welcomed the students and guests to the event at the Emerging Technology Complex.

“We at VC are so proud of being a big part of your movement into further education,” Hinds told the students. “Your education is the best investment you’ll ever make. Your parents know that and you clearly understand that by being part of the program.”

Victoria Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Robert Jaklich was the guest speaker.

“As I look out at the eyes of these students, I see doctors, lawyers, innovators, technology leaders, dream makers, can-do people,” Jaklich said. “People say about TexPREP, ‘I had to give up my summer.’ You didn’t give up your summer. You built up your future.”

The 87 students consisted of first-, second-, third- and fourth-year students who were selected for the program. Candidates must fill out an application, provide two reference forms from teachers, submit copies of their report cards, and write a 100- to 200-word essay on why they want to attend Victoria TexPREP.

“Every one of us gave up our summer and dedicated ourselves to this program so that we may enrich our minds and further our knowledge in the engineering and scientific fields,” said fourth-year student Julissa Martinez, who will be a senior at Galveston Ball High School. “We strive to better ourselves by getting an advantage in education with hopes to prosper and be successful in life.”

“I can say with no hesitation that this program has made a huge impact on my life,” said fourth-year student Jasmine Aviles, who will be a senior at Victoria’s Liberty Academy and plans on pursuing a career in biochemical engineering.

Victoria TexPREP is sponsored by the Victoria ISD, Calhoun ISD, Industrial ISD, Alcoa Foundation and Caterpillar Foundation.
