There is expected to be an increase in the demand for power line workers over the next 10 years, according to Victoria Electric Cooperative General Manager Blaine Warzecha.

Victoria College is teaming up with Victoria Electric Cooperative to offer a power line worker course to meet a growing demand in the field.

A Power Line Worker Level 1 course will be held from Sept. 13 to Dec. 6 from 6 to 10 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Victoria College’s Emerging Technology Complex, 7403 Lone Tree Road in Victoria. There will also be four Saturdays of training from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Victoria Electric Cooperative training site.

“Over the next 10 years, approximately 1/3 of the linemen in the utility industry will retire,” said VEC General Manager Blaine Warzecha. “This provides a great opportunity for individuals seeking a career in an essential and stable industry. Our goal in partnering with VC is to develop a pipeline of talent for local and surrounding cooperatives while generating careers in the communities we serve.”

Tuition for the Power Line Worker Level 1 course, which will provide an introduction to the power line worker trade, will be $615. Scholarships are available. Prerequisite for the course is completion of the Introductory Craft Skills class to be offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 23 through Sept. 7 in Room 104A of VC’s College Services and Training Building.

Enrollment is contingent upon successful completion of admission requirements that will be covered at a mandatory orientation session on Monday, Aug. 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 305 of VC’s Conference and Education Center at the Emerging Technology Complex. The admission requirements include a satisfactory Individual Department of Public Safety (DPS) background check ($3.58) and a Texas DPS Driver Record Report ($6.50). Students must bring the driver’s license and electronic payment method (credit or debit card) for the DPS reports.
