Dr. Daniel A. Cano was sworn in as a member of Victoria College’s Board of Trustees at a special meeting on Aug. 22.

Cano, a Victoria native and 2001 graduate of St. Joseph High School, was unanimously appointed by the board to the District 5 position on Aug. 11. Cano replaces John Villafranca, who resigned from the board in July.

Cano graduated cum laude with his Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University-College Station in 2005 and attained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the Baylor College of Medicine in 2009. He remained in Houston to complete his internal medicine residency before moving back to Victoria in 2012.

Cano now works as a Hospitalist Physician and is the Chief Medical Officer at Victoria’s Citizens Medical Center.

“I have a pretty extensive background in healthcare and, while working here in administration at Citizens, I have become well-versed in what the needs of the community are in terms of the allied health programs,” Cano said. “If I can lend some of that healthcare expertise back to the college, I think it would be a benefit for healthcare and education in the community.”

Cano also serves on the University of Houston-Victoria President’s Regional Advisory Board and the Victoria County Board of Health.

“I certainly value education quite a bit,” Cano said. “I have been participating with higher learning with the University of Houston President’s Advisory Board. I have enjoyed getting to know that aspect of the community. I thought being on the VC board would give me an opportunity to expand that knowledge base and skill set to serve the community further.”
