Victoria College’s Pirates enter the 2016-17 volleyball season with many new faces.

Just four players return from last year’s team that finished 23-19 overall and 12-2 in the South Texas Club Sports League.

“We’re very excited,” said sophomore defensive specialist Emily DeLuna. “We are a completely new team, but we get along really well. It’s going to be a great year.”

The Pirates open the season Friday, Aug. 26 at the Texadelphia Palomino Challenge in Laredo against Coastal Bend College. VC will face Universidad de Regiomontana and Laredo Community College on Saturday, Aug. 27 in the round-robin tournament.

“We have a lot of new players, but our blocking looks very good and we are ready to challenge some big teams,” VC Coach Josh Moore said. “I’m excited about the way we have come together as a team very quickly. Usually, team chemistry translates to wins. This weekend will be a good test of that chemistry seen in practice.”

Returning sophomores with DeLuna (Corpus Christi Ray) are sophomore right-side/outside hitter Jada Whitby (Victoria East) and middle blockers Bethany Salziger (Goliad) and Casey Jackson (Victoria East).

Incoming freshmen are middle blocker Katy Salziger (Goliad), defensive specialist Skylar Chreene (Industrial), middle blocker Jami Shimek (Hallettsville Sacred Heart), setter/outside hitter Erin Miksch (Flatonia), outside hitter Hannah Wright (Victoria East), defensive specialist/right-side hitter Karina Benitez (Corpus Christi Ray), setter/defensive specialist Alexis DeLuna (Corpus Christi Ray) and middle blocker Kadi Elledge (Edna).

“We have more all-around players,” DeLuna said. “It helps a lot when we have people who play every position and are not just stuck in one spot.”

VC will compete at the San Jacinto College Tournament on Sept. 1-3 and at the Scottsdale (Arizona) Community College Classic on Sept. 8-10. The Pirates’ home opener will be Sept. 14 against Coastal Bend College.

“These tournaments prepare us for the rest of the season,” Whitby said. “It’s going to be exciting to see how good we can get once we come together.”
