Victoria College students, faculty and staff honored those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 with a 15th Anniversary 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on campus Monday morning.

Victoria County Sheriff T. Michael O’Connor, the event’s guest of honor, recalled where he was the moment the Twin Towers fell.

“We were in training at the Victoria Police Department for mass casualties and active shooter events,” said O’Connor, who was a student at Victoria College for two years before attending Texas A&M. “We were down in the basement training in a classroom when, while sitting there waiting for the class to begin, one of the instructors turned on the TV. About that time, we saw the first tower in flames. I thought to myself, ‘Man, they’re serious about our training. This is almost like real-time.’ As we sat there, no one said a word as we realized that it is was really happening and not just a training video.’ ”

VC President Dr. David Hinds said he witnessed live television coverage of the terror attacks with students while an instructor at Brazosport College.

“I watched in disbelief with my students and the rest of the nation,” Hinds said. “We come here 15 years later to remember the fallen, to stiffen our resolve, to renew our hope and our commitment to each other, to humanity and to our democratic principles.”

Mike Hurt, Senior Pastor of Parkway Church, delivered the prayer and VC Police Chief Felix Appelt and VC Law Enforcement Academy Director James Martinez laid a wreath beside the 9/11 Memorial Tree near the Student Center. The colors were posted and retrieved by the Victoria Fire/Police Honor Guard, and VC Law Enforcement Academy Director James Martinez sang the national anthem.
