Choral Celebration II scheduled for Sept. 26

Choral Celebration II will be presented by Victoria College on Monday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Victoria Fine Arts Center.

Approximately 240 singers representing choral groups from Victoria College, Victoria’s East and West high schools, Calhoun High School and Cuero High School will perform at the free event. Dr. Marylynn Fletcher, choral director at Victoria College, will be conducting.

“The high school directors and I organized this concert last year to help students learn their all-state music,” Fletcher said. “Many of these students have been working on this music most of the summer to prepare for the Texas All-State Choir Auditions, which are Saturday, Oct. 1. Only about half will advance to the next level, and this is an opportunity for everyone to sing the audition music in a concert.”

The concert will open with the “Kyrie” from Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass. Eugenie Fuhrman, VC adjunct voice instructor, will be the soprano soloist. The women will sing “Hymn to the Dawn” by Gustav Holst and the “Flower Duet” song from Lakme by Delibes. The men will sing “Beati Mortui” by Felix Mendelssohn and “Things That Never Die” by Lee Dengler.

The concert will conclude with the mixed chorus singing “Wechsellied zum Tanz” by Johannes Brahms and “Flight Song” by Arnesen.

Glenn Hunter will be playing the piano accompaniments. Sponsors for the concert are Domino’s Pizza and Canteen.

The Victoria Fine Arts Center is located at 1002 Sam Houston Drive.
