Dahlstrom appointed to statewide Financial Literacy Advisory Committee

VC/UHV Library Director Joe Dahlstrom was recently appointed to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Financial Literacy Advisory Committee.

The 22-person committee’s goal is to determine ways to better advise students and parents on financial aid options in conjunction with THECB’s 60x30TX Strategic Plan for 2015-30.

“I expressed interest in this committee because the American Library Association has been promoting financial literacy and that was one of the areas of emphasis for the academic libraries in ALA,” Dahlstrom said. “While I think the committee’s main emphasis will be on financial aid, I see it as a little broader than that because students not only need to know what they’re getting into when they take out student loans, but also with credit cards and other things to be financially aware of.”

The committee will hold its next meeting on Nov. 1 in Austin. Along with promoting financial literacy, the committee reviews state financial aid program policies and procedures; reviews the collection, use, and reporting of data; and identifies areas of research for consideration.

The goal of the 60x30TX Strategic Plan is to have at least 60 percent of Texans ages 25-34 possessing a certificate or degree by 2030.

The FLAC consists of financial aid practitioners, public school counselors and others employed in the nonprofit sector in roles with responsibility for advising students regarding financial aid.

Dahlstrom said he was honored to be selected.

“I clearly envision libraries being an integral part of providing financial literacy and information to students as well as some of the student services people,” Dahlstrom said. “We want to make sure that everybody on campus has the right information.”
