VC basketball teams off to successful starts
Jesse Ortega

Victoria College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have hit the court for their 2016-17 seasons.

The men’s team is off to a 2-0 start with victories over club teams from Our Lady of the Lake University and St. Philip’s College.

The Pirates have only two sophomores on their roster – 5-foot-6 guard Jarrett Rees (Austwell-Tivoli) and 6-5 forward Jake Schulte (Industrial).

“We have a lot of unfamiliar faces this season,” Pirates head coach Jesse Ortega said. “On this year's squad, we only return one player from last year's playoff team. We are starting brand new and that which might scare most, only excites me. Our lack of returners only opens up more opportunities for our talented freshmen.”

VC’s eight freshmen are 6-3 guard Desean Green (Houston Homeschool Youth Association), 6-0 guard Bryant Wolf (El Paso High), 6-0 guard Devon Jones (Houston Redemption Academy), 6-6 center Dante Cunningham (Rosenberg Terry), 6-0 guard Elijah Fields (Houston Stratford), 6-0 guard Randy Perales (Corpus Christi King), 6-2 guard Lee Green (Victoria East) and 6-2 guard Austin Wehling (New Braunfels Canyon).

“We have an abundance of high-caliber players with tremendous potential on the team this year, and it's my job as well as my staff's job to work extremely hard to ensure that we realize that potential and bring it out of our guys daily,” Ortega said.

VC’s women’s team opened the season on Oct. 12 with a victory over St. Philip’s College. The Pirates have seven sophomores and seven freshmen on their roster.

“We lost six players from last year's 16-0 team and have just four returners this year,” said VC head coach Allison Peters. “Although we are a young team, we have come together well and have been working hard to reach the same success we had last season. Our biggest focus is always defense, both full- and half-court. If we work hard on defense and stop our opponent from scoring, we don't have to work so hard on offense.”

Peters said this year’s team has continued the team’s tradition of unity.

“In previous seasons, we have received much praise from other coaches and teams about our support for each other on and off the court,” Peters said. “As a coach, I am very proud to say our girls function as a family unit and I believe that is a big reason why we have been successful in the past. We hope to continue that success this season.”

Sophomores on the Pirates’ roster are 5-5 guard Allyson Dlouhy (Victoria West), 5-6 guard Jada Whitby (Victoria West), 5-7 guard Emily Harper (Hallettsville Sacred Heart), 5-8 guard Barbie Perez (Corpus Christi Ray), 5-10 guard Casey Jackson (Victoria East), 5-0 guard Silvey Estrada (Victoria West) and 5-8 guard Bethany Salziger (Goliad).

Freshmen on the women’s team are 5-6 guard Morgan Trevino (Victoria West), 5-4 guard Aylenn Cabrera (Aransas Pass), 5-4 guard Jessica Vega (Calhoun), 5-1 center Kadi Elledge (Edna), 5-2 guard Skylar Chreene (Industrial), 5-2 guard Miranda Moya (Calhoun) and 5-11 guard Katy Salziger (Goliad).
