VCs Emerging Technology Complex to be site of Crossroads Diabetes Expo

The Victoria Regional Health Alliance’s Fourth Annual Crossroads Diabetes Expo “Changing Habits, Changing Lives” will be held Saturday, Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. until noon at Victoria College’s Emerging Technology Complex.

Registration is encouraged for the free event. Breakfast, refreshments and samples from a food demonstration station will be served.

“This year’s Expo is going to be bigger and better than last year,” said DeAnna Alvarez, program manager for Texas AHEC East-Victoria Region. “We are excited that the National Kidney Foundation will be conducting kidney function testing at no cost. This public event will not only put diabetics and their caregivers in touch with area resources, but will also provide valuable information aimed at self-managing their disease.”

Diabetes affects 14 percent of the population in Texas. The disease costs the state an estimated $23.7 billion each year, according to the American Diabetes Association. Approximately 10,000 people in Victoria County have some form of diabetes, with only one in three of them aware that they have the disease.

Educational sessions designed to deliver information about lifestyle changes and disease management will be offered. Sessions will cover topics relating to nutrition and cardiac health, and the benefits of exercise and achieving good mental health. The topics will be addressed by professionals in fields of medicine, nutrition, nursing and diabetes self-care.

Cooking demonstrations and product/services exhibitors will be on hand. Among the health screenings will be kidney function testing, vision, foot checks, body composition analysis, blood glucose and blood pressure checks. No fasting is required prior to any of the screenings.

Sponsors for the event include Christus Health Plan, Citizens Medical Center, Kidney Smart, Victoria Television Group, Victoria Radioworks, H-E-B, Texas A&M Health Science Center, DeTar Healthcare System, Twin Pines and Twin Pines North Nursing and Rehabilitation.

VC’s Emerging Technology Complex is located at 7403 Lone Tree Road in Victoria.
