Victoria College was recently named a 2016 Mathematics Pathways Exemplar College by the Texas Association of Community Colleges and the Texas Success Center during the Texas Pathways Summit at the Hyatt Lost Pines in Bastrop.

The award recognized Victoria College as a leader in implementing pathways designed to increase student success in mathematics. VC was also named the Math Pathways Overall Exemplar College for 2015.

“This latest honor once again shows how committed Victoria College is to seeing its students succeed in mathematics,” said VC President Dr. David Hinds. “Our developmental math faculty and the students they are working with are to be applauded for their efforts in bringing this honor to VC.”

Victoria College was one of 38 community colleges in Texas considered for eight awards in four areas associated with the fundamental principles of the New Mathways Project. Community colleges submitted surveys that were evaluated by mathways experts from across the country. VC was awarded for Principle 3, which recognizes “colleges with demonstrated excellence in the intentional use of strategies to help students develop skills as learners.”

The Texas Success Center, in collaboration with the University of Texas’ Charles A. Dana Center, launched the New Mathways Survey to begin a statewide data collection process to document, learn from, and celebrate the work Texas community colleges have done to improve student success in mathematics.

“It is a great honor for Victoria College to be recognized for our efforts with the New Mathways Project,” said Babette Lowe, dean of academic foundations and student success. “It is a privilege to be a part of such a great project, and it’s exciting to be associated with foundational math faculty here at VC who work so hard to implement pathways for our students to succeed in mathematics.”
