‘Safe and Sober Kickoff’ scheduled for Dec. 1 at VC

The Golden Crescent Traffic and Safety Coalition will hold its “Safe and Sober Kickoff” on Thursday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Victoria College’s Student Center.

The coalition, which is comprised of first responders and safety officials from Victoria County and surrounding counties, will conduct an educational outreach to students and faculty from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Representatives from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Victoria Police Department and Victoria County Sheriff’s Office are scheduled to speak at the event, which is open to the public.

“Alcohol-related traffic fatalities rise during the holidays,” VC Student Activities Director Elaine Everett-Hensley said. “VC is proud to team with the Golden Crescent Traffic and Safety Coalition to communicate the dangers of drinking and driving.”

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, there was a nine-percent decrease in alcohol-related traffic fatalities during last year’s holiday period (Dec. 1, 2015-Jan. 1, 2016) compared to the same period a year earlier.

“We want to continue this trend,” said TxDOT Traffic Safety Specialist Stephanie Christina. “The holiday season is a time to celebrate with family and friends. Too often, we read of senseless tragedies during this time of year that could have been prevented.”
