Victoria College is working with Victoria Electric Cooperative to offer power line worker courses.

Victoria College will hold an information session at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13 for those interested in taking Power Line Worker Level I training beginning on Jan. 31. The event will take place in Room 226 of the Industrial Training Center at VC’s Emerging Technology Complex located at 7403 Lone Tree Road in Victoria.

Victoria College is teaming up with Victoria Electric Cooperative to offer the power line worker course to meet a growing demand in the field. VC began offering the course in the fall and all spots were filled for the first class.

“Over the next 10 years, approximately one-third of the linemen in the utility industry will retire,” said VEC General Manager Blaine Warzecha. “This provides a great opportunity for individuals seeking a career in an essential and stable industry. Our goal in partnering with VC is to develop a pipeline of talent for local and surrounding cooperatives while generating careers in the communities we serve.”

Power line worker training includes power line worker safety, introduction to electrical circuits and electrical theory, climbing wooden poles and other structures, aerial framing and other areas of the trade.

Scholarship opportunities are available for students who qualify.
