VC’s Wiley co-authors computer programming guidebook

Matt Wiley
Victoria College Associate Professor Matt Wiley co-authored a book offering working professionals, researchers, and students information on taking computer coding to the next level using the R language.

“Advanced R: Data Programming and the Cloud,” published by Apress, demonstrates “how to generate dynamic reports and tables showcasing results of analyses,” according to the book’s page on Springer.com.

“Automating the world of big data is the key to keeping our final results personal,” Wiley said. “Teaching the core techniques used by major retailers to sift through all transactions to give personalized recommendations, the book helps readers exploit the Amazon Cloud to get results quickly.”

Wiley co-authored the book with his brother, Dr. Joshua F. Wiley of Monash University.

“This book teaches the psychology and mathematics of finding needles in digital haystacks,” Wiley said. “The challenge today is not a lack of information; rather, we have too much. My first iPhone could store about ten movies. My current iPhone stores over 100. Imagine converting those videos into just the spoken words from the script – from about 100,000 words to over a million.

“How do we analyze a whole world of iPhones? We must automate, and we must then use massive compute power. That is what we teach in our book, how to automate big data, and throw 5, 10, 50 computers at a problem with the Cloud.”

Wiley has benefitted Victoria College with his ability to manipulate data and automate processes to improve the efficiency of Victoria College employees and now hopes to aid administrators to gain insight into key performance indicators in his new role as director of quality enhancement.

The softcover book, which has 15 chapters and targets graduate students, social science faculty and institutional researchers, is available at Springer.com for $49.99. The eBook version can be purchased for $39.99.
