Two Victoria College students were recognized during the Jan. 17 meeting of the Downtown Rotary Club for being the recipients of Rotary scholarships to assist them in pursuing their nursing careers.

Maya Wilkinson, a Level 4 student in VC’s Associate Degree Nursing Program, received the International Scholarship to Costa Rica. Hayden, a Level 2 student, was awarded the Downtown Rotary Club’s VC Foundation endowment worth $1,800.

Wilkinson was chosen from other applicants in Rotary’s District 5930, which extends from Ganado to the Texas-Mexico border. The scholarship will cover all expenses during a 14-day stay in Costa Rica beginning on May 27. She will be providing medical services in a rural International Service Learning clinic under the supervision of local licensed health professionals.

“I’ll be doing triaging, handing out medications and doing vitals,” Wilkinson said. “The most exciting part for me will be the first day when we get a crash course on medical terminology in Spanish. That’s something I will be able to carry with me the rest of my career.”

Hayden recently completed her first semester in the ADN Program. The $1,800 endowment is to be split over two semesters.

“It is a true blessing,” Hayden, 34, said of being chosen. “I was paying everything out of pocket, so I was really relieved.”

Victoria College’s two-year ADN Program leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing and eligibility to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.
