Museum to host book signing for VC professor’s ‘Our Vidas, Our Historias’

The Museum of the Coastal Bend will host a book signing for Dr. Karen Hagan’s “Our Vidas, Our Historias: Hispanic Voices from the Crossroads” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23.

According to Hagan, “Our Vidas, Our Historias” (“Our Lives, Our Histories”) provides readers perspectives from Hispanics who “worked and raised families and tried to improve themselves and their children all the while shrouded in anonymity.”

The book is based on a Hispanic oral history project that Hagan, a history professor at Victoria College, began working on in 2010 with four VC Phi Theta Kappa honors students. In 2016, the project won the Mary Faye Barnes Award for Excellence for Community History Projects, awarded by the Texas Oral History Association.

“Gradually, though, I came to realize that the words and recollections of our subjects amounted to more than just a successful project,” Hagan said. “Our interviews contained the memories and experiences of a group of people so often lost to history.”

Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the book signing. Proceeds from the book will be used to help Hispanic students attend college.

The Museum of the Coastal Bend is located at 2200 E. Red River Street in Victoria.
