Two Victoria College freshmen were selected to participate in the Texas Community College All-State Jazz Band at the Texas Music Educators Association’s annual convention on Feb. 8-11 in San Antonio.

Chris Murphy and Tivo Tristan were two of 19 community college students in the state to be chosen by a panel of judges comprised of university, community college and high school music educators after submitting taped auditions.

“I was quite surprised that I was selected, but I was very ecstatic when I found out,” said Tristan, who plays the trumpet. “I felt like it would really give me a chance to perform with some of the best musicians in the state. I was also very excited and proud to be able to represent VC in a very great way.”

“I was very excited to be selected for the group,” said Murphy, who plays the trombone. “There were trombonists from all over the state, and I was one of five that earned a chair, so it was a pretty great feeling.”

Tristan and Murphy, both graduates of Victoria West High School, have been accepted to the Texas State University School of Music and will transfer for the Fall 2018 semester.
