Victoria College hosted 12 graduates and students from three area high schools on June 7 during the final day of the Texas Area Health Education Center East-Victoria Region Health Careers Exploration and Observation Days.

Prospective health professions students from Industrial, Ganado and Austwell-Tivoli high schools received information from recent VC Emergency Medical Services Program graduate Denver Eichler; VC Respiratory Care Instructor Elizabeth Jendrzey; Dr. Tammy Mikulik, VC’s Physical Therapy Assistant Program academic coordinator of clinical education, VC Nursing Simulation Specialist Monica Hamilton and VC Nursing Lab Assistant Mary Kitchens.

“We have been doing this for 22 years,” said Jody Sanders, Texas AHEC East-Victoria Region senior program coordinator. “These are all students who participated in a longitudinal program for those who want to go to college and want to enter a healthcare profession. These students are already goal-driven and doing well in their math and science classes.”

“I loved walking around the college. There are so many programs and so many opportunities here,” said Seleine Mujica, who will be a senior at Industrial. “It was really cool to get all the support and encouragement. This made me a lot more excited about becoming a pediatrician.”

“This is my second year in this program, and both times I received more advice and information than I could imagine,” said Desirae Huerta, who will be a senior at Austwell-Tivoli and plans to become a registered nurse. “I didn’t think I would get any new information, but I did.”

The students visited Citizens Medical Center on June 5 and DeTar Hospital Navarro on June 6.

“We hope this makes them college-ready,” Sanders said. “We’re hopeful they go to college somewhere in our area and come back here after they graduate and enter the workforce in our 14-county region.”

Texas AHEC East Region has nine regional offices and serves 111 counties. The Victoria Region offices are located on Victoria College’s Main Campus at 2200 E. Red River Street. For more information on AHEC’s services, call (361) 485-6811 or email Robbyn.Michalka@TxAHECEast.org.
