Eighty nurses, including a large contingency of Texas School Nurse Organization Region 3 members, from throughout the Crossroads area attended the School Nurse Conference on June 29 at Victoria College’s Emerging Technology Complex.

The event, sponsored by Texas Area Health Education Center East-Victoria Region and Citizens Medical Center, included presentations on synthetic marijuana, suicide prevention, diabetes, dermatology and sexually transmitted diseases.

“Studies have shown that healthier students learn better,” said Tammy Kotzur, TSNO Region 3 president. “School nurses work to improve student health and provide care for students with a wide variety of health needs ranging from minor to complex, routine to emergent, and including both physical and mental health.”

Kotzur said a recent increase in teen suicide in the area during the past school year prompted an interactive session conducted by licensed professional counselor Annie Coffey.

“Her presentation enabled nurses to gain an insight into the stressors and protective factors that students possess or lack and their effect on the emotional wellbeing of the student,” Kotzur said. “School nurses will be able to use the information in the school setting in their nursing assessments and interventions with students.”

The conference attendees included school nurses from the 11-county Region 3 area of Calhoun, Colorado, DeWitt, Goliad, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Matagorda, Refugio, Victoria and Wharton counties.

Texas AHEC East Region has nine regional offices and serves 111 counties. The Victoria Region offices are located on Victoria College’s Main Campus at 2200 E. Red River Street. For more information on AHEC’s services, call (361) 485-6811 or email Robbyn.Michalka@TxAHECEast.org.
