Dual Credit

Dual credit is defined as college classes that are taken in high school and counts as credit for high school and college. Students who are juniors or seniors in high school may apply for dual credit classes.

Program Qualifications

  • Be a high school junior or senior (exemptions do exist for students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance; the Vice President of Instruction must approve) 
  • Meet high school or school district requirements for taking a dual credit class in addition to Victoria College’s requirement of a “B” average 
  • Meet any required course prerequisites 
  • Obtain permission from school and parent to take the course(s) 
  • Pass all sections of the TSI test, if not exempt.

    - ACT: 23 composite, with 19 English and 19 Math*
    - SAT: 1070 combined, with 500 Verbal and 500 Math*
    - TAKS: 2200 Reading PLUS at least a 3 on Writing, 2200 Math

Checklist for Admissions 

A student's first step in the application process is to meet with their high school counselor to receive academic advising on appropriate class selection. Students should then be ready to continue through the application process:

  1. Dual Credit Orientation - Attend a Dual Credit Orientation Session.
  2. Test Scores - Determine & verify student has the required test scores, as listed on the Dual Credit homepage. If a student needs to take the TSI test, please visit the Testing Center for the schedule of test dates.
  3. Application - Submit an application for Victoria College admission using Apply Texas.
  4. Permission & Consent Form - Submit an Early Admission Permission & Consent Form
  5. Transcript - Request and confirm most current high school transcript has been sent to VC Admissions & Records Office with all completed coursework through the sophomore year. For students entering their Junior year for the fall, VC will accept the most current transcript until the sophomore year is completed. These students should then have their completed sophomore year transcript sent.

  7. FERPA Release Form - All students should have this form on file.  If we do not have this form on file, discussion can only be made with the student.  Counselors and parents/guardians should ALL be listed on the FERPA Release Form so we are able to communicate with the school and family.
  8. Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination - If a student is planning to be on the Victoria College campus for more than 10 consecutive days, they will need proof of a current Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination.  The vaccination must be less than 5 years old from the start of the semester.
  9. Financial Aid - If a student would like to be considered for the Dual Credit Scholarship , please check both yes slots on the Registration Form. The student will need to have completed the FAFSA to see if he or she shows a financial need. Students will NOT be eligible for grants or loans as this only applies to high school graduates and GED completers.   10. Pay for Class(es) - Pay tuition & fees via the Pirate Portal online, by mail, over the phone (361) 485-6840, or in person with the Payments Office in the Student Services Building. 
  11. Textbooks - Purchase required textbooks.

Appeals Form to Increase Hours - Students are to complete this form IF they want to take more than two classes (6 credit hours) for a semester. A successful appeal to increase hours is based on a student's academic history and test scores, which means not all students will be granted the appeal. Students will need to indicate the top two classes they wish to take on the form.

Fall Registration

Registration begins: TBD 2014.

Spring Registration

Priority Deadline for all paperwork: November 16, 2014.

Registration begins: Novemeber 18, 2014. 

It is the students's responsibility to check his or her Pirate Portal to make payments by the appropriate deadline and ensure their schedules are correct.
