Course Descriptions from the Catalog:

MATH 0300 BASIC MATHEMATICS (3-0) CREDIT 0


This course is designed for students who score 189 or less on the mathematics section of the assessment test.

Topics include number concepts and arithmetic skills, word problems, graphs, tables, elementary algebraic skills, elementary two and three-dimensional geometry, Pythagorean theorem and reasoning skills. This course does not count toward graduation from The Victoria College.

MATH 0301 BEGINNING ALGEBRA (3-0) CREDIT 0
 

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in Math 0300 or assessment scores.

Topics include a review of the real number system, fundamental algebraic skills, equations, inequalities, exponents, radicals, graphing, linear functions, word problems, quadratic functions and concepts from geometry. The course does not count toward graduation from The Victoria College.

MATH 0303 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA (3-0) CREDIT 0
 

Prerequisite: Texas Success Initiative complete in Math or a B or higher in Math 0301.
 

This course is designed to prepare students for college level mathematics. Topics include the real number system, fundamental algebraic operations, graphs and functions, quadratic functions and systems of equations and inequalities. This course does not count towards graduation from The Victoria College.

 

MATH 1314 COLLEGE ALGEBRA (3-0) CREDIT 3
 

A study of fundamental concepts of algebra, equations and inequalities; matrices and determinants, functions, exponential and logarithmic functions.

 

MATH 1316 PLANE TRIGONOMETRY (3-0) CREDIT 3
 

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in either MATH 1314 or high school Algebra II.
 

Topics include the trigonometry of right triangles, circular functions, graphing, identities, equations, inverse functions, oblique triangles, complex numbers, vectors, polar coordinates and logarithms.

 

MATH 1324 FINITE MATHEMATICS (3-0) CREDIT 3
 

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in either MATH 1314 or high school Algebra II.
 

Topics from finite mathematics including sets, probability, binomial distribution, exponents, linear programming, vectors and matrices, linear models.

 

MATH 1325 BUSINESS CALCULUS (3-0) CREDIT 3
 

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in one of the following: MATH 1314 or MATH 1324 or high school Algebra II.
 

Topics in continuous mathematics including sets, functions and relations, topics from analytic geometry; limits, continuity, maxima and minima; simple derivatives and integrals as applied in business or the social sciences.

 

MATH 1332 COLLEGE MATHEMATICS (3-0) CREDIT 3
 

Prerequisite: Texas Success Initiative complete in Math or a grade of B or higher in MATH 0301.
 

Topics include modern algebra and geometry and may include sets, logic, number systems, number theory, functions, equivalence, congruence, measurement, other geometric concepts, and the introduction to probability and statistics.

 

MATH 1342 STATISTICS (3-0) CREDIT 3
 

Prerequisite: Texas Success Initiative complete in Math or a grade of B or higher in MATH 0301.
 

Collection and tabulation of data; bar charts; graphs; sampling; averages; dispersion; correlation; normal curve; probability; applications to various fields. A knowledge of basic algebra is recommended.

 

MATH 1350 FUNDAMENTALS OF MATHEMATICS I (3-0) CREDIT 3
 

Prerequisite: MATH 1314 with a grade of C or better or Texas Success Initiative complete in Math.
 

Topics include sets, functions, numeration systems, number theory, properties of the natural numbers and the real number system with an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking. This course is designed specifically for students who seek middle grade (4-8) teacher certification.

 

MATH 1351 FUNDAMENTALS OF MATHEMATICS II (3-0) CREDIT 3
 

Prerequisite: MATH 1350 with a grade of C or better or Texas Success Initiative complete in Math.
 

Topics include geometry, probability and statistics, as well as applications of the algebraic properties of real numbers to concepts of measurement with an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking. This course is designed specifically for students who seek middle grade (4-8) teacher certification.

MATH 2312 PRE-CALCULUS (3-0) CREDIT 3
 

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in either MATH 1316 or high school Trigonometry.
 

Topics include a review of algebraic concepts, a study of algebraic and transcendental functions and their graphs, polar coordinates, induction, binomial theorem, sequences and series.

 

MATH 2413 CALCULUS I (4-0) CREDIT 4
 

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in MATH 2312 or a score of 600 on the math portion of the SAT or a score of 29 on the math portion of ACT.
 

Topics include limits, continuity, differentiation, related rates, optimization, anti-derivatives, definite integrals and applications of the definite integral.

 

MATH 2414 CALCULUS II (4-0) CREDIT 4
 

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in MATH 2413
 

A study of derivatives and integrals of transcendental functions, techniques of integration, L'Hospital's rule, improper integrals, infinite series and polar coordinates

 

 

MATH 2415 CALCULUS III (4-0) CREDIT 4
 

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in MATH 2414
 

Vectors and vector functions, partial derivatives, double and triple integrals, Green's and Stokes' Theorems.

MATH 2320 DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS (3-0) CREDIT 3
 

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in MATH 2414
 

Solution of ordinary differential equations and their applications to problems in engineering and allied fields.
