Medical Laboratory Technology

The Medical Laboratory

The practice of modern medicine would be impossible without the tests performed in the clinical laboratory. A medical team of pathologists, specialists, technologists, and technicians work together to determine the presence, extent, or absence of disease and provide data needed to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

Medical Laboratory Technology Program

The Victoria College Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program provides education and training resulting in an Associate of Applied Science degree. Graduates are eligible to take a National Certification exam and become certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

Program History

The Medical Laboratory Technology Program was started in 1982 with its first class graduating in 1984. The program was started based on input from the local hospitals stating the need for such a program to supply qualified MLTs to help staff local and area medical laboratories.

The program initiated the accreditation process in 1982 through the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) and the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS). The program received initial accreditation in 1985 from CAHEA (NAACLS). The MLT program was reaccredited by CAHEA (NAACLS) in 1987, 1990, 1995, and 2002. The program was awarded a seven year accreditation (the highest possible) by NAACLS in 1995 and 2002.

The Victoria College provided a campus student lab in the old Science building when the program was started. A new student lab was built in the Johnson Allied Health building in 1985.
