Medication Aide

Medication aides administer prescribed medicines to patients and prevent adverse patient reactions to the medicines. 

The medication aide course will prepare you to take the Texas Medication Aide Permit Examination. This course serves as a companion course for those who are already working as a Nurse Aide. Only Nurse Aides who are currently on the State Registry and employed in long term care or non-licensed direct care facilities or who have been employed for at least 90 days in an approved facility are eligible to take this course.

Coursework includes classroom, classroom laboratory and clinical practice activity. Clinical practice is conducted in area long term care agencies.

Coursework includes:

  • Concepts of medication administration
  • Basic pharmacology
  • Effects of chemotherapeutic agents on the body systems
  • Drug therapy for common disease processes
  • Age related variations to medication administration
  • Role of the Medication Aide
