Museum of the Coastal Bend offering camps for youth

atlatl2 Youngsters will get the chance to hone their atlatl skills during the Museum of the Coastal Bend’s Camp Q&A on July 17-20.

The Museum of the Coastal Bend is offering two more summer camps for youngsters in the month of July.

On July 17-20, the museum will offer a Camp Q&A for children ages 9-12. The camp, which will be held each day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will teach youngsters how to participate in the sport of quidditch and how to use an atlatl.

Quidditch is a sport derived from the “Harry Potter” book series and involves two teams of seven players mounted on broomsticks. The object of the game is to throw the most balls through various-sized hoops in an allotted amount of time.

An atlatl is a stick that was used by American Indians to propel a spear. The hunting tool is believed to have been utilized as early as the Upper Paleolithic period in Europe.

The cost for Camp Q&A is $10. The registration deadline is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10.

The museum will host a Junior Archaeologist Camp on July 24-27 for Girl Scout Juniors, Cadets and Seniors. Campers will learn the basics of archaeology, sort and organize artifacts, and take a field trip to an active archaeological site. Transportation will not be provided to the site.

The cost for the Junior Archaeologist Camp is $30 and $27 for museum members. The camp will be held each day from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The registration deadline is 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 14.

Registration forms for both camps can be accessed at MuseumOfTheCoastalBend.org and submitted at the museum or emailed to Amanda.Lanum@VictoriaCollege.edu.

The Museum of the Coastal Bend is located on Victoria College’s Main Campus at 2200 E. Red River Street in Victoria. The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is “pay-what-you-want.”
