Area students and their families are encouraged to attend GenTX Way to Pay Day on Thursday, Oct. 11 to discover opportunities to make college more affordable and receive one-on-one assistance with financial aid and scholarship applications.
“We want to provide opportunities for all individuals, and attending an event like GenTX Way to Pay Day is one way we can do that,” said Bob Glenn, president of the University of Houston-Victoria. “Higher education is important, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. We want to show students and their parents that going to college is achievable.”
The free event will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson Street. Students and parents will need their 2017 tax returns and Social Security numbers to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
During the event, students can attend a “Find Your Way to Pay” presentation that will provide information about beginning the financial aid process, explain challenges surrounding the FAFSA, and provide an in-depth look at the many types of financial aid available. Attendees also will be able to get feedback on scholarship essays, submit the FAFSA with assistance from college financial aid counselors and complete a college application.
“VC and UHV financial aid counselors will work one on one with students to help them complete their FAFSA,” said Darin Kazmir, co-chair of the GenTX-Victoria Steering Committee. “Submitting it properly and on time is an important first step to exploring available financial aid options.”
GenTX-Victoria Way to Pay Day is a joint effort between the University of Houston-Victoria, Victoria College, Victoria Independent School District, communities in schools of the Golden Crescent and other local partners.
Generation TX, or GenTX, is a statewide initiative started by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to encourage an entire generation of Texans to pursue education or training after high school graduation. The initiative provides resources for students about career paths, financial aid, college planning tips and inspirational success stories.
GenTX Senior Celebrations will take place May 2 and 3 at Victoria East and West high schools, and attendees will hear from a motivational speaker about empowering students’ dreams. GenTX Decision Day will take place May 3 and encourages the community to wear a college T-shirt to applaud students who have decided to pursue education or training after high school. Both events are sponsored by The Dow Chemical Company.
