Victoria College Athletics Program shifts focus to serve athletes in the Crossroads

After five seasons of competition in Division I of the National Junior College Athletic Association in men’s basketball and women’s volleyball, Victoria College announced its decision to return to club and intermural competition in order to serve more students from the Crossroads.

An analysis of the past five years in NJCAA participation revealed that the vast majority of student-athletes moved to Victoria from outside of the region, often from out of state, to participate in athletics. Few complete their educational journeys in Victoria, nor remain in the community after graduation to enter careers.

“When we consider the mission and vision of Victoria College, as well as our focus of educating and training students to enter careers of high economic value in the region, the needed direction of the athletic program becomes clear,” said VC President Dr. Jennifer Kent. “Returning to club and intermural competition in basketball and volleyball will create more opportunities for local students who might not have the same competitive background but still wish to be involved recreationally.”

VC will continue to participate in NJCAA cross country and track and field as the sports are well-suited to local athletes who wish to continue at the collegiate level.
