Phlebotomists collect blood specimens for lab tests.
The phlebotomy course will prepare you to work in any blood collection-related career, such as at a blood bank, hospital or lab. You will learn a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions.
Classroom and laboratory portions are conducted onsite at VC. The required clinical portion of this course is conducted in area health care agencies, clinics, private physician offices and medical laboratory facilities.
Coursework includes:
- Vacuum collection devices
- Syringes
- Capillary skin puncture
- Butterfly needles and blood culture
- Specimen collection on adults, children and infants
- Infection prevention
- Proper patient identification
- Labeling of specimens and quality assurance
- Specimen handling, processing and accessioning
- Professionalism, ethics and medical terminology
