Under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, physical therapist assistants (PTAs) provide services for patients who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their ability to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.
PTAs work in a variety of settings including hospitals, outpatient clinics, home health, nursing homes, schools, sports facilities and more. Care provided by a PTA may include:
-
teaching patients/clients exercises to increase flexibility and mobility
-
helping increase a patient’s/client's strength,balance, and coordination
-
providing training for activities such as walking with crutches, canes, or walkers
-
providing training to improve function needed for daily activities
-
use of physical agents and electrotherapy, such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation
Those interested in becoming a PTA may enroll in VC’s 2-year associate degree program and then pass the National Licensing Exam to qualify for employment as a PTA in Texas. The starting salary range for a PTA is $40,000-50,000 per year.
