SPANISH
SPAN 1300# CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH I (3-0) CREDIT 3
Develops the students ability to speak the language; stresses the
use of idiomatic expressions; builds the vocabulary through extensive
practice; stresses oral and grammatical proficiency through presentation
and discussion of cultural, historical, and literary topics.
SPAN 1310# CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH II (3-0) CREDIT 3
Prerequisite: Spanish 1300; Beginning/and or Intermediate high school
Spanish; native or practical speaking ability.
Continues developing the students ability to speak the language;
stresses the use of idiomatic expressions; builds the vocabulary through
extensive practice; stresses oral and grammatical proficiency through
presentation and discussion of cultural, historical, and literary topics.
SPAN 2306# INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH (3-0)
CREDIT 3
Prerequisite: SPAN 1310 or SPAN 1412 or consent of instructor.
Stresses oral and grammatical proficiency through presentation and discussion
of cultural, historical, and literary topics.
NOTE: Students who have some background in
Spanish might consider taking the departmental
placment examination prior to registering for one of the following sequential
courses. After placing out of a course, students will, upon completion
of the next sequenced course with a grade of C or better,
be given credit for previous courses in the sequence.
SPAN 1411# ELEMENTARY SPANISH I (FOR BEGINNERS) (3-2)
CREDIT 4
A comprehensive course covering the essentials of Spanish: pronunciation,
basic vocabulary, common idioms, functional grammar, and cultural insights.
Students will be expected to carry on short conversations in Spanish by
the end of Spanish 1411.
SPAN 1412# ELEMENTARY SPANISH II (3-2) CREDIT 4
Prerequisite: Spanish 1411 or consent of instructor after departmental
placement exam Continuation of Spanish 1411.
Course increases verbal expression; additional verb tenses.
SPAN 2311# INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I (3-0) CREDIT 3
Prerequisite: SPAN 1412 or consent of instructor after departmental
placement exam.
A general review of Elementary Spanish with a great deal of oral work.
Course increases oral communication skills and broadens global cultural
perspectives.
SPAN 2312# INTERMEDIATE SPANISH II (3-0) CREDIT 3
Prerequisite: SPAN 2311 or consent of instructor after departmental
placement exam.
Continuation of language learning at the intermediate level.
SPAN 2321# INTRODUCTION TO HISPANIC LITERATURE I (3-0)
CREDIT 3
Prerequisite: SPAN 2311 or consent of instructor.
Recommended for students whose native language is Spanish but who have
not studied it and have placed out of Spanish 1411, 1412, and 2311 with
departmental exam.
An introduction to Hispanic literary works that deal with the Hispanic
civilization and culture. Attention to reading and writing skills, vocabulary
building and oral expression. Reading of Spanish poetry, short stories,
and excerpts of novels and plays. Aspects of Spanish music and art are
also studied.
SPAN 2322# INTRODUCTION TO HISPANIC LITERATURE II (3-0)
CREDIT 3
Prerequisite: SPAN 2311 or consent of instructor.
Recommended for students whose native language is Spanish but who have
not studied it and have placed out of Spanish 1411, 1412, and 2311 with
departmental exam.
An introduction to literary works that deal with the Hispanic American
civilizations and culture. Hispanic American thought and expression (with
emphasis on Mexican literature) are studied through short stories, poems,
essays, excerpts from plays and novels, selections from periodicals and
videos. Aspects of Spanish American music and art are also studied.
SPANISH IN CUERNAVACA, MEXICO
Victoria College offers Spanish immersion courses through the Universidad
Internacional The Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies in
Cuernavaca, Mexico, each summer.
Three courses are offered:
SPAN 1300 CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH I MEXICO (3-0)
CREDIT 3
SPAN 2311 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I MEXICO (3-0) CREDIT 3
SPAN 2312 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH II MEXICO (3-0) CREDIT 3
Students live with a local family and attend intensive Spanish language
classes at the Universidad
Internacional. Students with little or no knowledge of Spanish are encouraged
to enroll in SPAN 1300, Conversational Spanish I. Enrollment in SPAN 2311
or 2312 is contingent upon a students level of language preparation
(see prerequisites listed for these courses). Contact the Spanish Department
for further details.
