ADULT EDUCATION
The Victoria College Adult Education Program provides non-credit, free, high quality educational programs that focus on adult literacy, GED preparation, workforce training, and English proficiency for speakers of other languages.

Located off-campus at 802 East Crestwood, the Center's regular business hours are 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Classes are also offered in seven nearby counties: Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, and Refugio. Individuals seeking information about classes are welcome to stop by during regular business hours, or call 361-573-7323 (573-READ).

Adult Basic Education (ABE): The Adult Education Program offers classes in the core academic subjects of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies to aid in GED or TASP preparation. Curriculum is structured within a real-world context and emphasizes life skills. Students also receive instruction to improve their workplace skills, including job attainment, retention, and advancement. Students set their own educational goals and work at their own pace.

English as a Second Language (ESL): ESL classes are available to individuals with limited English proficiency. ESL curriculum is also structured within a real-world context. An emphasis is placed on conversational fluency, reading, writing, and attaining citizenship. ESL instruction is goal-oriented and self-paced.

Eligibility: A person can enroll in The Victoria College Adult Education Program if he or she is at least 17 years old and has officially withdrawn from school (17-year-olds must have a social security card, a valid Texas Driver's License or DPS photo I.D. to enroll, and an official withdrawal form from last school attended stating that student withdraws for the purpose of attending "Victoria College Adult Education Program") or has a high school diploma or GED but wishes to enhance academic skills*, or wishes to learn English or improve English fluency skills.

* Note: This program exists to serve undereducated adults. Adults scoring higher than a 12.9 (grade equivalency) on the state mandated assessment instrument (TABE) are not eligible to attend Adult Basic Education classes.

How to register for classes at the Victoria Adult Education Center: Registration for Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes: Potential participants must first complete a 12-hour Foundations course to be eligible to enroll in classes. The Foundations course is offered twice a month, afternoons (Monday through Thursday 12:00-3:00) and evenings (Monday through Thursday 6:00- 9:00). Upon completion, participants report to the Adult Education Center on the monthly registration day to receive a class schedule. Registration for English like a Second Language (ESL) day classes occurs every Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. with a second section for orientation from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Registration for evening ESL classes is the second and fourth Thursday of each month between 6:00 and 8:30 p.m.

Class times at the Adult Education Center: Mornings: (ABE & ESL) Monday through Thursday 8:30-11:50, afternoons: (ABE) 12:30-3:50. Evenings: (ABE) Monday and Wednesday 6:00-9:20, (ESL) Tuesday and Thursday 6:15-9:15.

Academic Calendar: The Center is a year-round open entry/open exit program and follows The Victoria College scheduled holidays. Additionally the Center and area classes close for an annual reporting period during the month of June.

EL PROGRAMA DE EDUCACIÓN DE ADULTOS
El programa de educación de adultos de Victoria College provee programas educacionales sin crédito, gratis, de alta calidad que se enfocan en la alfabetización de adultos, preparación para el GED, entrenamiento para trabajar y la fluidez del inglés para personas de habla extranjera.

Educación Básica para Adultos (ABE): Este programa ofrece clases en las materias esenciales para el GED y TASP, como: lectura, escritura, matemáticas, ciencia, y estudios sociales. El programa de estudios está diseñado dentro de un contexto del mundo real y enfatiza el desarrollo de habilidades para la vida. Los estudiantes también reciben instrucción para mejorar sus destrezas en su ocupación como por ejemplo: el conseguir empleo, mantenerlo y ser ascendido en él. Los estudiantes realizan sus propias metas de educación y trabajan a su propio ritmo.

Inglés como Segundo Lenguaje (ESL): Las clases de inglés como segunda lengua están disponibles para personas con limitada fluidez en inglés. Este programa de estudios también está diseñado dentro de un contexto del mundo real enfocándose en el desarrollo de habilidades para la vida. Se enfatiza en la fluidez verbal, lectura, escritura y pruebas para la adquisición de la ciudadanía, TASP y TOEFL. La enseñanza de ESL está orientada hacia una meta y los estudiantes trabajan a su propio ritmo.

Usted puede inscribirse en el Programa Para Adultos sí: usted tiene por lo menos 17 años y tiene oficialmente un retiro de la escuela (con 17 años tiene que tener tarjeta de Seguro Socia, una licencia de manejar válida de Texas ó una identificación con foto para registrarse y retiro oficial de la última escuela a la cual asistió que conste que el estudiante se retiró con el propósito de atender a "Victoria College Adult Education Program"), usted tiene un diploma o GED, pero usted quiere mejorar sus destrezas académicas *, usted quiere aprender el idioma inglés mejorarlo. *Nota: Este programa es para adultos con baja educación. Los adultos que sacan un puntaje mas alto de 12.9 en el examen (TABE) no son elegibles para asistir a las clases de educación básica para adultos.

Cómo registrarse para las clases en el Centro de Educación de Adultos de Victoria (AEC): Las inscripciones para clases de Educación Básica Adulta (ABE): Los posibles participantes tienen que completar primero unas 12 horas de un curso básico para ser elegibles a inscribirse en las clases. El curso básico es ofrecido dos veces al mes, en las tardes (lunes a jueves 12:00-3:00) y en las noches (lunes a jueves 6:00-9:00). Para concluir, los participantes se reportan al Centro de Educación de Adultos (AEC) en el día de registro mensual para recibir el horario de clases. CONTINUING EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE TRAINING
The Victoria College offers a variety of continuing education courses and programs designed to meet the needs of the community. From customized education and training to lifelong learning activities, the Department of Continuing Education provides businesses, industries, and individuals the opportunity to learn or improve technical and professional competencies, along with vocational and recreational classes for personal enrichment.

Workshops, seminars, and institutes can be planned to meet the continuing education needs of specific groups. In such cases, Continuing Education Units (CEUs) may be awarded to participants. Funding for qualified training related to economic development may be available through sources such as Skills Development Fund.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
In addition to non-credit courses and programs, The Victoria College offers a wide range of programs and facilities for cultural enrichment and community service. Musical and drama productions, the Lyceum guest lecture series and the John W. Stormont Lectures on South Texas are but a few of the programs that are offered throughout the year for students and the community. The Fine Arts Auditorium, Johnson Symposium, Student Center and the Library are college facilities that are frequently utilized by the public.

DISTANCE EDUCATION
The Victoria College offers a growing number of courses via distance education either in an on-line, computer-based format or through interactive videoconferencing facilities in many area communities. A distance education fee may be assessed for courses taken via distance education.

Most distance education students at Victoria College will enroll in courses developed and taught by Victoria College faculty. However, The College is a partner in Virtual College of Texas (VCT), a collaborative of Texas' fifty community college districts and the Texas State Technical College System, through which it may offer courses not otherwise available at the College.
