College Recycling Procedures
Paper:
1. Bins are located in each building (usually in the office areas) and in all major student computer labs.
2. Paper should be separated into:
White/copy paper
Office mix (glossy paper, magazines, and anything else that doesn’t fit the other categories)
Colored copy paper
Newsprint
3. The college relies on volunteers in each building to ensure that appropriate bins are available.
4. Paper must be collected in standard size trash bags.
5. Full bags of paper are collected as needed by building custodial personnel.
Custodians must contact the Special Services employee at 361-220-1385 for paper pick-up.
6. Maintenance will collect all papers to be recycled and bring them to a recycling center.
Cardboard:
1. Cardboard should be placed in a conspicuous location, such as outside an office door or next to a regular trashcan, for pick up by custodians.
Please do not discard cardboard in the regular trash; this often results in conscientious custodians having to pick it out of the trash to retrieve it.
2. Custodians will collect cardboard for recycling by the maintenance department.
E-Waste:
1. Old/outdated/no-longer-needed electronics such as computers, monitors and computer peripherals (speakers, printers, etc.) contain heavy metals that if disposed of improperly (in a regular landfill) can be toxic to the environment and potentially the public. This type of waste is termed “e-waste.”
2. Do not dispose of any e-waste in the regular trash or dumpsters.
3. If you need to dispose of e-waste,
First contact the computer helpdesk to allow them to track changes in electronic inventory, then:
For small amounts of e-waste pickup (up to 2 computer systems), call Special Services at 361-220-1385.
For large items and/or larger quantities, the please submit an on-line Work Order to Building Maintenance
4. Once contacted maintenance will pick up the e-waste and ensure proper disposal.
Recycling at Satellite Campuses and Centers
The maintenance department can provide periodic pick-up of recyclable materials (such as on a quarterly basis).
In order to schedule a pick-up of recyclable materials, please submit a work order via the college website or e-mail the Director of Physical Plant & Operations.
