Six-week course to help people quit tobacco use

Helping area tobacco users quit the habit is the goal behind a six-week Smoking Cessation course offered at Victoria College Feb. 11-March 18 in Room 128L of the Health Sciences Center on VC’s Main Campus.

Through a grant given to the county by the Department of State Health Services, Texas Area Health Education Center East-Victoria Region will provide counseling and support services to participants wanting to quit tobacco use in all forms. In addition, over-the-counter medication can be given free of charge for those Victoria County residents in the course who qualify.

According to the state’s County Health Rankings for 2014, Victoria County exceeds the state average when it comes to adult smokers. Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death and impacts almost every system in the body, contributing to lung cancer, heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and even sudden infant death syndrome, according to the American Lung Association.

“With our support group, we hope to offer behavior modification techniques that will help someone who is addicted to tobacco change their habits and their lives one step at a time,” said Paula Crawford, AHEC program coordinator.
The group will meet every Wednesday from noon-1 p.m. beginning Feb. 11 for six weeks. There is no charge, but registration is encouraged.

To register or for more information, contact Paula Crawford at (361) 485-6813 or email Paula.Crawford@VictoriaCollege.edu.
