Victoria College’s Board of Trustees has announced Dr. David Hinds as the sole finalist in the search for the next president of Victoria College. Board members unanimously voted to extend an offer to Hinds at a special meeting held Monday, June 15.

Hinds, the senior vice president of instructional affairs at Allegany College in Maryland, was one of three finalists presented to the board for consideration by VC’s Presidential Search Committee. Other finalists were Dr. Patrick Vaughn, vice president for academic affairs at St. Louis Community College’s Wildwood Campus, and Dr. Colleen Smith, district senior vice president of academic affairs and student development at Collin College.

“We are excited to name Dr. Hinds as the sole finalist, and we’re very appreciative of the search committee’s work as well as the input we received from students, faculty, staff, and the community during the presidential search forums,” said Ron Walker, board chair.

Walker said the board’s decision is dependent upon a successful negotiation of a contract and final approval of the contract by the board. The board is expected to make the offer final in early July.

In his position as senior vice president of instructional affairs, Hinds provides leadership and direction to Allegany College’s career and transfer programs as well as student academic services. He also serves as the president of the Maryland Council of Community College Chief Academic Officers.

Prior to his current position at Allegany, Hinds served as the division chair for Business, Computer Technology, and Human Services for 11 years as well as a faculty member for Business and Computer Technology for 22 years at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Working full time through each of his higher education degrees, Hinds earned his PhD from The University of Texas at Austin in Higher Education Administration (Community College Leadership); his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston; and his Bachelor of Science degree from Texas State University.

His career in education began in 1986 as a computer science teacher at San Marcos High School. Two years later, he moved to the public sector working as a business analyst at Electronic Data Systems in Plano, Texas. In 1990, he began his work in higher education at Brazosport College, where he served as faculty member and division chair. He also served as intern to the chancellor at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas, during his doctoral studies with the Community College Leadership Program at The University of Texas at Austin.

The search for Victoria College’s fifth president began in January when current president Dr. Tom Butler announced his plans to retire this August after serving seven years in that position.

The Association of Community College Trustees was hired by VC’s Board of Trustees to provide assistance with the search. A search committee comprised of members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, a current student and community members narrowed the list of applicants to three finalists. The first week of June, each finalist was interviewed by the Board of Trustees and visited the VC campus to meet with students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members.
