Victoria College’s Gonzales Center has awarded $39,653 in scholarship funds to Gonzales-area students for the fall 2014 semester.

Of that amount, $21,645 was provided to students planning to enroll in Workforce and Continuing Education courses. Contributions for the scholarship came through a Workforce and Continuing Education General Scholarship Fund, Dickson Allen Foundation Workforce Funds, and Dickson Allen Foundation Dual Credit Scholarship funds.

“Students attending VC Gonzales are very fortunate to have wonderful support from our local community,” said Jackie Mikesh, VC Gonzales Center manager. “Many local civic organizations give generously to help students attend college, and this support can make a big difference in keeping a student in school.”

Courses eligible for funding include Nurse Aide, Electrical I, HVAC Level I, Pharmacy Technician, Welding Level I and Welding Level II. One hundred and twenty-five students are currently enrolled and working toward certification in these programs. Although funds have been awarded, students can still apply for the scholarships.

Four Welding I students are Gonzales High School seniors who received scholarships to attend welding classes at the Gonzales Workforce Training Center. These four students will take Welding II in the spring and will graduate with a Level II certificate in May 2015.

“Growing up in a single-parent home, my mother had to work two jobs to make ends meet,” one scholarship recipient wrote in a thank-you note. “This made me realize the value of a college education. I will be in the first in my family to attend college, and I hope to set a fine example for other young adults who have experienced the same hardships.”

An additional $12,310.00 in scholarship money was awarded to students enrolled in academic courses and the Vocational Nursing Program in Gonzales. Funding came from both public and private donors who provided scholarships to assist students with the cost of tuition and textbooks.
