VC to offer adult education classes in Gonzales

Jackie Mikesh

Victoria College is now accepting applications for adult education classes in Gonzales County. The classes will be taught at VC’s Gonzales Center in the Gonzales Workforce Training Center.

Student registration and orientation will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at the GWTC, Room 201.

English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education, college preparatory courses and GED classes will begin soon at the center, according to Jackie Mikesh, Gonzales Center manager.

Mikesh said this opportunity will offer Gonzales County students a smooth transition from completing their high school equivalency to enrollment in Victoria College’s programs of study. Student benefits will include access to onsite academic and financial aid services, a tutoring and resource room and two computer labs.

The VC Gonzales Center, in partnership with the Gonzales Learning and Career Center, has already successfully offered Adult Basic Education through the SAIL program (Students Accelerating through Integrated Learning). Victoria College’s SAIL training is funded in part by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Accelerate Texas Initiative. This provides funding for tuition and instruction, allowing 14 students to complete certificates in the areas of commercial truck driving, nurse aide and welding. Electrical training has recently been added as a program option.

“Victoria College’s Gonzales Center has become an integral part of education in Gonzales County, and we are excited about adding adult education to the existing services VC offers students in this community,” said Tiffany Johnson, director of Victoria College’s Adult Education Program.
