What are some career paths?

Some possible career options are news reporter, high school teacher, communications officer, and English professor. Salary could range from $39,000-$50,000 in Texas. 

What will I learn?

The English department is dedicated to helping students become better writers and thinkers through the study of composition, literature, and technical writing. 
Freshman composition courses provide students with the skills required to write college-level essays using MLA documentation and citation style. Sophomore British and American literature courses will add practice in writing college research essays and introduce students to various fields of literature. Technical writing will introduce the principles of writing in professional settings.

How will these courses fit my college pathway?

With these courses, students can obtain either an Associates of Arts or Associates of Science degree from Victoria College. Those who wish to continue their studies may transfer to humanities programs at Texas public universities. While studying English provides students with communication, research, language, and analytical skills needed in any profession, graduates may wish to explore careers in writing, journalism, and secondary education, or pursue graduate study in humanities fields.

What will I learn?

The INRW (Integrated Reading and Writing) course is designed for students whose scores in reading and writing did not meet the Texas State Initiative (TSI) requirement. This course is designed to advance students’ critical reading and academic writing skills. It combines basic academic reading skills with basic writing skills to increase students’ proficiency in composing a variety of academic texts. A simultaneous co-requisite course is required.

How will these courses fit my college pathway?

Victoria College provides developmental education courses and/or Non-Course Based Options (NCBOs) for those students needing additional preparation to transition into college-level English and reading-intensive courses. Placement is based on the students’ scores in reading and writing on the TSI Assessment. Students who are not TSI complete must meet with an advisor to register. The completion of this course, and its co-requisite course, fulfills all TSI reading and writing requirements. Students who complete this course will gain the communication, writing, reading, and analytical skills necessary for success in other or future college coursework.

What will I learn?

Victoria College offers Spanish I and II. In these courses, students will learn and develop basic Spanish language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within a cultural framework. Students will master the vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary to communicate and comprehend at the beginner and low intermediate levels.

How will these courses fit my college pathway?

From these courses, students will be able to express themselves in Spanish in short conversations and communicate through short writings as well as longer essays. They will also be exposed to diverse Spanish-speaking cultures and traditions. Those who wish to continue their studies may transfer to humanities or other programs at Texas public universities. While studying Spanish can benefit students in nearly any social and work environment, graduates with majors or minors in Spanish may use these skills in education, medical, and business fields, as well as international or public relations.

What will I learn?

In Victoria College’s philosophy course, students will study the major issues and figures in philosophy. Topics may include theories of reality, theories of knowledge, theories of value, and their practical applications. Students will develop the skills to research and write philosophy and term papers and engage in competing visions of the good, the just, and the beautiful. They will also analyze philosophical problems and evaluate arguments.

How will these courses fit my college pathway?

From this course, students will be exposed to diverse ideas, belief systems, and the study of ethics. Those who wish to continue their studies may transfer to humanities or other programs at Texas public universities. While studying philosophy can benefit students in future social and work environments, graduates may wish to explore careers in secondary education, state/local government, public relations, and business, or pursue a law degree or graduate study in the field.
