VC receives grant to help more students get on the road to a successful career in trucking

Victoria College received a $98,640 grant to help more individuals earn their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) Program, the grant is one of several VC has received to create its own Truck Driving Program and offset student tuition costs.

“This grant, along with scholarships and other government programs, provides our students with multiple options for financial assistance,” said Rachel Nessel, VC’s Director of Workforce & Continuing Education. “Our goal is to provide equitable opportunities for students to advance their careers and support their families.”

The CMVOST funding will provide $1,370 scholarships, covering approximately 29 percent of tuition for 72 students, while other scholarships and government programs are expected to cover the difference for qualifying students.

VC’s five-week Truck Driving Program runs continuously, with classes offered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The program costs $4,750.
