How VC’s Rachel Nessel turned dual credit into career confidence

Victoria College has been a constant in Rachel Nessel’s life for the past 20 years.

Her journey started as a dual credit student at Edna High School, which gave her a major advantage once it was time to pursue her bachelor’s degree. All those credits earned in high school and VC added up to time and money saved.

“VC allowed me to graduate early with my bachelor’s degree, ultimately reducing the overall cost of my education,” said Nessel. “VC made it possible for me to save time and money while gaining confidence in my ability to succeed in college-level work.”

Nessel earned her bachelor’s degree at Texas Lutheran University and returned to VC in 2009, but this time as an employee. Today, she’s the Department Chair for Career & Technical Education – Continuing Education.

Her appreciation for the value of education and the doors it can open continues to grow and even inspired her to return to school to obtain her master’s degree at the University of Houston-Victoria.

“Working at VC has deepened my understanding of the importance of education and the power of second chances,” said Nessel. “We meet people where they are—supporting students who are balancing work, family and life with flexible, affordable options. I’ve seen firsthand how VC empowers people to believe in themselves again, and I’m grateful to play a role in that transformation.”

VC continues to be a point of pride for Nessel. Now, as both an alumna and a leader, Nessel is helping others build the same foundation of confidence and opportunity that changed her life.
