Bridgette Sutton Marshall
For Bridgette Sutton Marshall, Victoria College has always been more than just a place to study. It has been a foundation, a launching pad, and now, a home for her career.
Born and raised in Victoria, Marshall chose VC in 1995 because it was close to home and offered the small class sizes she needed as a first-generation college student. Looking back, she says the decision made all the difference.
“VC prepared me for university coursework, for the college environment, and it saved me thousands,” said Marshall. “My time as a student had a profound impact on me. It inspired my choice to become a college professor, and my 15 years as a VC employee have been amazing.”
After completing her coursework at VC, Marshall transferred to the University of Houston–Victoria, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English and later a master’s degree in education. She went on to teach in public schools, including Patti Welder Middle School, before returning to VC as a Professor of English. Over the years, she served as Humanities Department Chair, a tenured professor, and now holds the role of Dean of the Division of College Access and Community Partnerships.
For Marshall, her passion has always centered on opening doors for others.
“It means so much for us to be able to expand access to education,” said Marshall. “Education changes everything. There are so many benefits to community college. You get a ton of support here.”
That belief in VC’s mission isn’t just professional — it’s personal.
“I have so much pride and confidence in VC's academic programs that I have sent each of my daughters here,” she added.
With more than 20 years in education and experience in teaching, administration and student support, Marshall has helped guide thousands of students. Yet for her, the most meaningful part remains the same: seeing students discover their potential and achieve goals they once thought were out of reach.
“I’ve seen firsthand what an impact a community college education can have,” said Marshall. “That’s why I’m proud to continue that work here at VC.”
The same college that once gave her confidence as a first-generation student is now where she leads efforts to expand access for the next generation.
