Michelle Higgins
Michelle Higgins feels right at home in the Victoria College Learning Lab.
After nearly 30 years of teaching high school social studies and English, she has always considered the classroom a second home. When she retired, Higgins took a year off before searching for a part-time role that was both flexible and fulfilling. As a former VC student, she found the perfect fit as a learning assistant—an opportunity that has given her everything she hoped for and more.
“I have really enjoyed connecting with the students and building relationships,” said Higgins. “I love it when they stop by just to say ‘hello’ and grab a coffee on their way to class.”
Originally from Port Lavaca, Higgins received a Rotary Club scholarship in 1989 to attend VC with plans to pursue a career in education. During her time as a student, she worked as an English tutor before transferring to Texas A&M University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English. She would go on to earn a master’s degree in education from Houston Christian University, formerly Houston Baptist University.
“My experience as a tutor at VC is probably what pushed me further into education,” recalled Higgins. “I loved the feeling of helping other people.”
That passion has shaped her life’s work—guiding students to discover their strengths and gain confidence in the classroom. Now, as a learning assistant, she continues to do just that. For Higgins, it’s about more than homework help; it’s about teaching students how to learn.
“Everyone learns differently,” she said. “We can break down how you study and find strategies that work best for you—from color-coding notes to creating mind maps or making simple connections that help you retain material.”
For Higgins, the Learning Lab has brought her back to the place where she first discovered the joy of helping others succeed.
