Devoni Borgohain’s journey from VC nursing student to Vocational Nursing Program leader

Victoria College is more than a family tradition for Devoni Borgohain — it’s the foundation that helped shape her family’s future. Over the years, VC has been a turning point, a support system and a launch pad for five family members.

“For our family, VC wasn’t just a place to learn,” said Borgohain. “It was the foundation that changed the course of our lives.”

Her mother was the first to attend VC, enrolling in the Vocational Nursing (VN) Program and encouraging her children to pursue higher education, especially healthcare. Following her mother’s lead, Devoni, her two sisters, and eventually her brother, all became part of the VC legacy.

Even with her mother’s encouragement, Borgohain initially hesitated to enter nursing. But a few key influences, including a career aptitude test at St. Joseph High School in Victoria, helped her find her calling.

“I remember taking that aptitude test, and it said: healthcare, education, and counselor,” she recalled. “That’s exactly what I do every day. VC gave me the support and encouragement to accomplish my goals. I’m proud to now teach in the very nursing programs that shaped my journey.”

Borgohain completed VC’s Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program in 2009, earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree and returned to the college as ADN faculty in 2014. Earlier this year, she accepted a new role as Program Chair of the Vocational Nursing Program, where she helps shape and support the next generation of healthcare professionals.

“Working at VC is incredibly fulfilling,” said Borgohain. “We have students of all ages and backgrounds, and it’s amazing to be part of a program like this. Whatever challenges you’re facing, you can do it — and there are people here who want to help you through it.”

For 100 years, Victoria College has been a place where students like Borgohain and her family discover their purpose, overcome challenges and give back to their communities.
