Jonathan Fowler of Ganado has become the first student to complete Victoria College’s Class B Commercial Driver’s License training course, gaining new skills and a pay increase in the process.

Fowler, who works for Jackson County Precinct 2, completed the course through full scholarship support made possible by Victoria College’s recent TRUE grant and the VC Foundation. After earning his Class B CDL, Fowler became qualified to operate dump trucks and other heavy equipment for the county.

“Once I was able to show them I could run all the equipment with my Class B, that boosted my pay,” said Fowler. “I was really happy about that.”

Fowler encourages others interested in truck driving careers to pursue the training opportunity.

“Go for it,” said Fowler. “Take your time, try your best to learn everything and make sure that you study. You’re going to learn a lot from Paul and the whole team at VC. When I went to take the road test I was nervous, but I felt prepared. It was a big relief when I found out that I passed.”

Victoria College’s Class B CDL training prepares students to operate single vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, including dump trucks and box trucks. The course, which takes approximately two weeks to complete, includes instruction in vehicle safety, driving techniques and regulatory compliance specific to Class B vehicles.

The course includes 100 contact hours of training. Tuition is $2,800, though eligible students may qualify for a variety of funding opportunities, including scholarships and workforce assistance programs, to help offset the cost.
