Victoria College's M.G. & Lillie A. Johnson Student Success Center
Victoria College celebrated the opening of the new M.G. & Lillie A. Johnson Student Success Center Wednesday, Aug. 26, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by college leaders, community members, donors, students and employees.
The three-story Student Success Center brings many essential student services together in one centralized location, creating a more convenient and connected experience for students.
The building houses the VC Library, Learning Lab, Testing Center, Success Coaching, Admissions, Advising, Financial Aid, Career & Transfer Services, the Counseling Center, Veterans Services, Student Life, Pirate Pantry, and Citizens Convenient Care.
The $36.5 million project was funded through a combination of voter-approved bonds, gifts, grants and institutional funds. Victoria County voters approved a $10 million bond for the project in May 2023. Prior to the bond election, VC had committed $26.5 million toward the project through gifts, grants and institutional funds.
The Student Success Center was identified as a priority in VC's Facilities Master Plan, which called for a centralized location for student services and academic support. The project also addresses the need to modernize the college’s former student services and library spaces.
The M.G. & Lillie A. Johnson Foundation has been a longstanding and influential benefactor of Victoria College. Through generous support, the foundation has helped expand access to higher education and strengthen the college’s capacity to serve students and the broader Crossroads community.
“This building is a testament to what we can accomplish when our community comes together,” said Dr. Jennifer Kent, VC President. “We are incredibly grateful to the donors, voters and supporters who helped make the Student Success Center a reality. By bringing so many resources together in one location, we’re making it easier for students to find the support they need to reach their goals, complete their education and build a brighter future.”
Following the ribbon cutting, guests were invited to tour the new facility and enjoy appetizers and samples from Revolve Kitchen, which offers a rotating weekly menu for students and anyone visiting the Student Success Center.
The Student Success Center is part of Victoria College's continued investment in providing students with the resources, services and support they need to succeed in college and prepare for their futures.
