Marissa Rivet
Victoria College nursing student Marissa Rivet is being recognized for her quick response after a patient suffered a life-threatening allergic reaction during a recent clinical rotation.
“Honestly, I was just doing what I hope someone would do for me,” said Rivet. “It was a very rewarding experience, and it made me feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.”
Rivet recognized the signs of a potential allergic reaction and promptly alerted the charge nurse, allowing the concern to be addressed before further complications could occur. Her quick response demonstrated the excellent clinical judgment she has developed through her nursing education and training at VC.
“Marissa’s dedication to patient advocacy is a wonderful example of what it means to be a compassionate and professional nurse,” said Shona Williams, VN Assistant Professor. “She recognized a potential problem, trusted her clinical judgment, and took immediate action to advocate for her patient. Her actions demonstrated critical thinking, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to providing safe, quality patient care.”
Rivet is set to complete VC’s Vocational Nursing (VN) Program in December. She originally began the program in Gonzales, where she completed her first two semesters, before transitioning to Victoria to finish the program.
Rivet plans to continue her nursing education through VC’s bridge program to the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program.
“All of the instructors have been amazing,” said Rivet. “Everyone has been pushing me to be a better nurse, and I wouldn’t be here today without them.”
In the Golden Crescent region, mid-level pay for licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) averages $30 per hour (including overtime), while registered nurses (RNs) average $40 per hour (including overtime).
